Meet Michael Page, a Finance & Banking major completing a paid, full-time internship with Bank of America as part of their Finance Management Associate Program (FMAP). As an FMAP intern, Michael serves on the Global Commercial Banking Controller Team in Corporate Finance. He supports them through the completion of finance-related assignments that vary on a daily basis.
Michael found his internship by working closely with Alison Shea Reaves in The Walker College of Business Career Services Office. Alison helped Michael along the way with his resume, interviewing skills and making the most of networking events. Once he gave his resume to Bank of America, he was invited to a networking social at Char, a restaurant here in Boone, where he and other students met with recruiters and other employees of the company. After some successful mingling, Michael was offered an interview the following day. The rest, as they say, is history.
Michael found that his biggest challenge in getting this internship was his lack of experience in networking situations. This can be tricky and there are certainly right and wrong ways of doing it. He also felt he did not have a lot of finance-related experience prior to applying.
What would Michael tell future students about applying for this or other internships?
“Don’t stress about getting the job or not. Focus on preparing yourself at your internship. The rest of it will work itself out.” – Michael Page
